Sorry to hit you with the hard stuff straight up but we think this is the most important reason we should all make the transition to shampoo bars.
Did you know that shampoo bars have been used since WW2? It’s been kept on the ‘down low’ for a while now and thankfully they’re making a comeback due to the growing percentage of conscious consumers and businesses.
You’re probably wondering, what’s this shampoo bar buzz about? Why should I use it? And what are my options?
WHAT IS A SHAMPOO BAR?
Obviously, shampoo bars are a solid form of shampoo. Whilst our toxin-free Shampoo Bars may look like your typical soap bar, they are specifically formulated to deliver a 2-in-1 nourishing and cleansing experience for your hair and scalp. They use natural oils and nutritious ingredients to transform dry or damaged hair whilst avoiding cost, chemicals and plastic waste. These multi-tasking gems will provide huge benefits to your hair and mamma earth by fast-tracking your toxin free and waste free journey.
DO I NEED A CONDITIONER AS WELL?
Conditioning is not always required when using a shampoo bar due to their high moisturising benefits, however depending on your hair type, you may want the extra boost. I keep my conditioner barin my beach bag so I can quickly run it through my hair in the showers after swimming or surfing to avoid the salt water drying out my hair!
HERE ARE YOUR 5 REASONS TO SWITCH TO SHAMPOO BARS:
Shampoo bars are an eco-friendly, plastic-free and economical alternative because one shampoo or conditioner bar replaces three plastic bottles of liquid shampoo or conditioner.
↠ The cardboard packaging of our bars is completely biodegradable and you have the option to purchase a bar without packaging too 🙌
Shampoo bars (the ones we stock) are completely free from toxinsand are packed with nourishing ingredientsthat are good for your hair and the planet.
The terms ‘natural’ and ‘toxin free’ are not regulated (which is one of the reasons I started this company). So do your research (or ask us). Just because they claim to be free from SLS or parabens doesn’t mean they are completely toxin-free. Steer away from the following bad guys in your shampoo or conditioner:
THE REALITY OF CHEMICAL/RESIDUE BUILD UP:
The nutritious ingredients of the shampoo bars work with the natural oil in your hair that keeps it healthy and shiny, instead of stripping it away. This boosts the overall health and happiness of your hair and scalp avoiding built up residue and promoting thickness, growth and shine.
Toxin-free shampoo bars can be used to cleanse your body and face because they don’t dry out your skin and use natural nourishing ingredients. This means they can replace 3-4 different bottles in the shower. Say goodbye to OCD freak outs and excess clutter!
We take ours camping, which is important if you use outdoor showers as the ingredients of the bar won’t threaten the surrounding environment and animals. Even better if you travel via plane. No stress about your bottles bursting, taking up half your bag or having to sacrifice them because you forgot the 100 ml rule. Less time feeling bad for leaving some behind ✌️.
Liquid shampoo is on average 60% water, and liquid conditioner is 90%. We’ve all paid ridiculous prices for half a cup of water.
Shampoo and conditioner bars are highly concentrated (with only the good stuff) giving them a longer life of up to 80+ washes. They also avoid overuse and wastage that most liquid products with pumps face. This makes them the real cost-effective option. Less costs for you and the planet!

THE TRANSITIONING PHASE
Like natural deodorant, shampoo bars involve a transition or ‘detox’ phase for most people. Why? Because your hair and scalp has trained itself to handle commercial shampoo and conditioners that contain nasties like detergents and silicone which strip back natural oils. This process challenges the health of your hair and leaves a build-up of chemicals over time(as shown in the video above). This built up residue takes time to leave the hair, which can cause the hair to feel greasy, heavy or dull as it detoxifies itself and learns to embrace its natural oils again. Don’t give in, it’s worth it once you’ve overcome this phase and you’re on the other side!

An Apple Cider Rinse once a week will help soothe dry scalps, stimulate growth, and strengthen hair. You can check out the one we have here (it has added ingredients for extra nourishment) or you can make your own by mixing 2-4 tablespoons of organic Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) to 1 cup of water. Simply rinse it through your hair, let it sit for a few minutes and rinse out with water. Keep in mind that your hair won't stay smelling like ACV once it has dried.
SHAMPOO BAR GUIDE
Here's a quick guide on which bars suit which hair types:
|Hair Type||Shampoo With a Purpose||The Australian Natural Soap Co.||Beauty and the Bees|
*NOTE: SHAMPOO (AND SOAP BARS) ARE NOT DESIGNED TO BE STORED IN THE SHOWER IN BETWEEN USES.
A good quality shampoo bar is made with saponified oils which will turn mush if left in a wet environment. To make your bars last, pat them dry and store outside of the shower on a rack so they can air.
