Welcome back GFZs,
You’ve heard of compostable packaging, refillable everything... but how about carbon-capturing cement?
It’s Aussie-made, and it’s called Kapture.
Founded in 2022 byclimate-conscious duo Raj Bagri and Jake Youngert, Kapture is tackling one of the biggest (and heaviest) problems in sustainability: cement production, aka the stubborn heavyweight champ of CO₂ emissions.
Spoiler: traditional cement accounts for roughly 8% of global emissions. That’s more than the aviation industry.
So what does Kapture do? Glad you asked.
Kapture has developed a next-gen technology that captures carbon emissions from combustion engines (like diesel generators) and embeds them into, wait for it, concrete. Yes, the very stuff you walk, drive, and build on.
The genius? Instead of releasing CO₂ into the atmosphere, their process locks it into a solid, creating a carbon-embedded byproduct that replaces part of traditional concrete ingredients.
So you get less pollution, stronger, longer-lasting concrete, and no extra costs. It’s the sustainability hat trick.

Between January and March 2025, Kapture completed a major pilot with Western Australia’s Horizon Power and partnered with concrete manufacturer PERMAcast to trial the cement byproduct in real-world conditions.
The results? Let’s just say they didn’t just pass, they cemented their impact (sorry, had to).
For every tonne of their special solvent used, 0.7 to 1.2 tonnes of CO₂ are kept out of the air during cement production. That’s not just carbon neutral, that’s carbon better than neutral.
One of the most exciting things? Kapture’s tech is retrofit-friendly. That means it can be added onto existing diesel generators without ripping everything up and starting from scratch. It's practical. It's scalable. And it's planned to launch for industry use in 2025.
More trials are lined up with another major Aussie electricity utility, so keep your eyes peeled. This little startup is gearing up to scale big.
Let’s be real: the construction industry isn’t exactly known for being eco-friendly. But it doesn’t have to stay that way.
Kapture is showing that cleaner building practices don’t have to compromise on strength, cost, or convenience. Their tech turns one of the dirtiest materials into part of the climate solution. Whilst stopping such emissions at its source would be ideal, these kinds of innovations are what we need more of in such a time!
So next time you’re walking down a footpath, staring at a carpark, or admiring a new build, just remember: your concrete could be helping the planet instead of harming it.
And if Kapture has its way, it soon will be.

Until next time GFZ’s,
Much love,
