Welcome back, GFZs! Happy good Earth news day. How are we all?
Today’s story talks about solar power, news that lights up our hearts! See what we did here?
We want to introduce you to the Solar Sisters… a group of incredible female entrepreneurs who develop clean energy to bring light to Africa while creating jobs for women.
Places like Tanzania rely on kerosine. Yep, we said it, kerosine!
The Solar Sisters help local women in Tanzania and other parts of rural Africa, to start, grow and sustain successful clean energy businesses so that they can build a brighter future for themselves, their families, and the world. So far, over 7,400 Solar Sister entrepreneurs have reached over 3 million people in Africa with clean energy. Can we get a woot woot?
While their clean energy reduces greenhouse gas emissions while cooking, it creates a ripple impact of change. The light it powers will allow students to study after dark, fetch water, allow businesses to open longer…
Even celebrate the small but mighty benefits like reading with their children at bedtime.
A report published in 2014 (and soon to be updated) estimated more than 620 million people live without access to electricity, and nearly 730 million people use hazardous, inefficient forms of cooking, something that affects women disproportionately.
The best part is that renewable energy sources, including sun, wind and hydro, are in plentiful supply in the region. The following steps now mean implementing and including this renewable energy supply into the plans for Africa’s future. It is estimated that renewables will make up almost half of sub-Saharan Africa’s power generation growth by 2040! Can we get another woot woot over here?
