Welcome back, GFZs. Everyone on our team is a big fan of secondhand shopping, so we're excited to give you some tips!
Thrifting, preloved, retro, or vintage – whatever you call it, secondhand shopping is having a major moment. This multi-billion dollar market is not only surviving but thriving, thanks to a growing awareness of the importance of sustainable spending and the unique finds you can score. And we are here for it!
Recent studies predict that the global clothes resale market is set to nearly double by 2027, reaching a staggering $350 billion. This wave of sustainability extends beyond fashion, with eBay launching its 'certified by brand' program in 2023, encouraging brands to elevate their game in the secondary luxury goods market.
Even tech giants like Amazon are jumping on the sustainable bandwagon. In fact, Amazon's secondhand sales grew by 15% in the first nine months of 2023, while existing secondhand global marketplace Depop reported an 8% rise for the same period.
What was once considered a Gen Z trend has evolved into a cross-generational movement.
More people decluttering their wardrobes contributes to the market's quality and diversity, attracting a new audience. We're even seeing more men joining the movement! Perceptions are shifting; consumers now understand they can find high-quality items at bargain prices.
Secondhand is a powerful tool for a more sustainable future, but it's crucial to acknowledge that, as demand skyrockets, so do prices, potentially pushing out the very people who relied on secondhand shopping most.
There is also the paradox of the "resell flip". This means that when we know an item can be easily flipped for cash, it can fuel impulsive purchases, leading to closets overflowing with unworn pieces waiting for their online debut. This surge in "buy-and-resale" culture can contribute to overconsumption and undo the environmental benefits of secondhand shopping.
It is easier than ever to give your clothes a second life, earn some money, declutter your wardrobe, and join the sustainable fashion revolution!
Here are our five tips for selling secondhand:
By being mindful consumers and supporting ethical practices, we can ensure that this booming market truly benefits everyone and the planet. Now go and flick through your wardrobe as you might be sitting on a sustainable gold mine.
Shoot us any questions or other tips you might have; we love hearing from you!
We hope this was helpful. Until next week GFZ's,
Much love,
