Sustainable Curls 101: Our Top 7 Tips...

Hydrating curls can be a challenge, but with the right techniques and products, it is possible to keep your curls moisturised and healthy.

  1. Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner: Look for products that are specifically formulated for curly hair and that contain ingredients like glycerin, coconut oil, or shea butter. These ingredients will help to nourish and moisturize your curls. These solid shampoo and conditioner bars by Viva La Body is loaded with nutrients that nourish and strengthen thick, curly or wavy hair. They also come in a travel pack tooOr perhaps this powder-to-foam style by Goodeau!
  2. Don't wash your hair too often: Over-washing your hair can strip it of its natural oils, leaving your curls dry and brittle. Aim to wash your hair every 2-3 days, and use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo. Nue Bar has your back here!
  3. Use a leave-in conditioner: A leave-in conditioner will help to keep your curls hydrated throughout the day. Apply a small amount to damp hair, scrunching it in gently with your fingers.
  4. Use a deep conditioning treatment: Deep conditioning treatments can help to restore moisture to dry, damaged curls. Use a treatment once a week or as needed to keep your curls looking and feeling healthy. Try this curl rescue treatment by Desert Shadow to lock in that moisture without the toxins involved.
  5. Avoid using heat tools: Heat styling tools can cause damage to your curls, making them more prone to dryness and breakage. If you must use heat, use a heat protectant spray and try to limit heat styling to once a week.
  6. Use a diffuser when blow-drying: If you need to blow-dry your hair, use a diffuser attachment to minimize heat damage and help maintain your curls' shape.
  7. Sleep with a silk or satin pillowcase: Cotton pillowcases can cause friction and tangles, which can lead to dryness and breakage. Switch to a silk or satin pillowcase to help preserve your curls' moisture and shape.

First things first, it’s important to recognise the differences between curly and straight hair to best know how to care (and pick the right products) for your locks.

Curly hair requires a lot more moisture than straight hair. It tends to get dried out or damaged without sufficient hydration which then leads to breakage, frizz, and unmanageable curls.
