Welcome back GFZ's!
If there’s one thing Billie Eilish knows how to do—besides sweeping up Grammys and Oscars—it’s making sustainability 'cool'. The pop star has teamed up with Google Maps to help her fans navigate her upcoming Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour in a way that’s kinder to the planet.
Imagine this: You’ve got your concert tickets, your eco-friendly merch, and your favourite Billie songs on repeat. But now, thanks to this dynamic partnership, finding the greenest route to the concert or the nearest plant-based bite to eat has never been easier. Simply open Google Maps, and voila! It’s like having a personal eco-concierge guiding you to low-carbon options like public transport, cycling routes, or even walking trails. Plus, plant-based eateries around each tour stop will be highlighted. How cool is that!
“Every action matters, no matter how big or small, and together we can truly begin to heal our beautiful planet.” And she’s not just talking the talk. Earlier this year, she critiqued the trend of releasing multiple vinyl formats (we’re looking at you, deluxe editions) just to boost album sales, citing the excessive waste involved. True to her word, she announced eco-friendly vinyl that’s almost as green as her iconic hair once was. Almost.
Billie’s not alone in her quest to clean up the music industry. Coldplay’s skipping flights whenever possible and even using sustainable aviation fuel when they can’t avoid them. And Massive Attack is breaking down touring emissions with climate scientists like they’re dissecting a beat drop. Their recent gig in Liverpool, powered entirely by renewable energy, set the tone for a greener future in live music.
Let’s face it—world tours are the elephant in the room when it comes to music’s carbon footprint, with emissions often dominated by the travel involved. But partnerships like Billie’s with Google Maps are a refreshing way to address this challenge from a fan-first perspective, turning a concert into an eco-adventure. And who knows? Maybe these steps will inspire other artists to reimagine what sustainable touring can look like.
