In a world bursting with innovation and fresh ideas, one name is planting the seeds of climate curiosity in the next generation — Suzie Hicks. Known affectionately as The Climate Chick, this vibrant climate communicator (originally from Los Angeles, USA) and her sunflower puppet sidekick "Sprout" are transforming the way young kids learn about the planet and how to care for it.
Launched on Earth Day 2025, Suzie Hicks the Climate Chick and Sprout is a colourful YouTube series designed for children aged 4 to 8. Through playful storytelling, original songs, and interactive activities, Suzie and Sprout explore big topics—like the greenhouse effect and solar energy—in small, digestible bites. Their goal? To spark curiosity, build confidence, and show kids that they can be part of the solution. Each episode offers more than just facts—it plants real seeds of action and empowerment.
A recent study found that 70% of caregivers are calling out for fun, educational content that helps kids connect with nature and climate solutions. Suzie saw this gap and ran with it. But the magic doesn’t stop at YouTube. She’s created classroom curriculums, hosted school visits, and even launched Sprouting Bright Futures — a community festival in Los Angeles where families connect with local change-makers, learn, and play.
Suzie’s journey is a wonderful blend of art and science. With a background in theatre and film, plus a master’s degree in climate science, she merges facts with flair to keep little ones both informed and entertained. Her climate education spark was lit back in 2017 during an internship at an aquarium, where she realised that performance was a powerful way to communicate big ideas. Since then, she’s been on a mission to turn “climate fear” into “climate cheer”.
One of the series’ most loved features is its use of music to tackle emotions. Take the song S.T.O.P. — it helps kids manage their feelings when they hear about tough topics like pollution or rising temperatures. It teaches them to pause, breathe, and act with purpose. Across schools, families are singing along and finding joy in learning about the Earth together.
Suzie and Sprout are proof that big impact can start small — one song, one seed, one smile at a time. With creativity, connection, and a sense of fun, they’re helping raise a generation of eco-literate legends who believe that looking after the planet is both possible and exciting.
So here’s to sparking hope, embracing action, and cheering on little change-makers all over the world.
Thanks for tuning in again this week GFZ's. For more Earth-loving stories, you can pick from so many others here!
Lots of love,
Ellie xx
