Welcome back GFZ’s, to another Happy Earth News story! Hold onto your groceries—there’s a new paper bag in town, and it’s about to shake up everything you thought you knew about “sustainable” packaging.

The Hidden Cost of That Brown Bag

Let’s be honest. You’re at the checkout, reusable tote in hand, but suddenly those paper bags start looking like the better choice. They’re not plastic, they’re biodegradable—it feels like the more eco-friendly option, right? It’s easy to assume paper is the greener pick. But when you look at the bigger picture, it’s not that simple.

Most paper bags still come with a price. And we’re not just talking dollars—we mean trees, water, and energy. Yep, even the humble brown bag at your local supermarket likely came at the cost of a tree, and a whole lot of resources to boot.

The Leaf-Loving Game Changer

Enter:Releaf Paper—a Ukrainian company rewriting the script (on actual leaves, no less).

These clever cookies are creating paper bags using fallen leaves. Yep,fallen—as in the ones you’d usually kick through in a park or curse for clogging the gutters. Releaf collects these leaf cast-offs from urban areas (no forests harmed here), gives them a good clean and dry, and transforms them into stylish, sturdy paper bags.

And the best part? These leafy legends usefar fewer resources than conventional paper production. No clear-cutting. No massive water usage. No guilt.

From Bag to Soil in a Blink

Even their afterlife is impressive. While standard paper bags can take up to270 days to decompose, Releaf bags break down in about 30 days. They return to the earth faster than your average banana peel (okay, not quite, but close).

Not only does this process reduce deforestation, but it also puts urban waste to good use. Often, fallen leaves are burned, releasing CO₂ into the air. So Releaf’s innovation helps cut down on emissions and deforestation in one swoop. Talk about doing theleaf-work.

The Gold Standard Bag

Let’s be clear:BYO bags are still the gold standard. Reuse always wins. Any single-use paper bags require significant energy and water to produce and often isn’t durable enough for multiple uses. Reusable bags, especially those made from cloth or recycled materials, are designed to last for years—reducing waste and conserving resources over time. By switching to reusables, you're cutting down on the demand for raw materials and helping keep landfills and waterways cleaner. It's a small habit that makes a big difference.
