We all want our homes to feel fresh, healthy and inviting, so we reach for cleaning products to get the job done. But have you ever paused mid-scrub to think about what’s actually in those sprays and solutions?

From single-use wipes and synthetic sprays to plastic sponges and disposable paper towels, conventional cleaning routines can leave behind a trail of waste and chemicals that’s anything but "clean". In fact, many liquid cleaning products release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, invisible gases that can build up indoors, sometimes reaching levels up to ten times higher than outside. These VOCs come from everyday products like disinfectants, cosmetics and degreasers. Research shows they can cause a range of health issues including eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, and in some cases even damage to the liver, kidneys and nervous system.

Luckily, with a few clever swaps, it’s easier than ever to ditch the chemicals and waste while still enjoying a sparkling, low-tox home. This Plastic Free July, we’re sharing five of our favourite plastic-free and non-toxic cleaning alternatives, all loved by our community, kind to the planet and totally satisfying to use.

Swap 1: Reusable Paper Towel

Regular paper towels might seem harmless, but they’re single-use, wrapped in plastic, and often made from virgin materials. In the US alone, around 6 million tonnes of paper towels end up in landfill each year.

Instead of reaching for another roll, try reusable alternatives like bamboo towels, which can be washed and reused up to 85 times per sheet and compostable eco cloths or unpaper towels. Already have a drawer of tea towels? Even better. Reusing old tea towels as cleaning cloths is a great way to breathe new life into something you already own.

Swap 2: Sustainable Sponges & Brushes

Your everyday sponge might be sneakily shedding microplastics with every wash, especially if it’s made from plastic and when you're done? Straight to landfill.

Switch to scrubbers that clean up after themselves. Our Go For Zero community loves compostable sponges and cleaning brushes. They’re effective, natural, and return to the earth when their job is done. And if your brush wears out? Keep it on rotation for shoe cleaning, scrubbing grout, or getting into tricky corners.

Swap 3: Plastic Free & Natural Cleaning Products

According to the Australian Water Association, between 80,000 and 140,000 chemical contaminants from cleaning products end up in our wastewater. Whether you're wiping benches, polishing glass, or tackling the bathroom our natural cleaning sprays skip the harsh chemicals and single-use plastics. Just add water, let them dissolve, shake, and they're ready to go. Check out our range of multipurpose, glass and bathroom sprays, perfect for every corner of your home.

Swap 4: Natural & Refillable HandWash

It’s one of the most-used products in the home, yet hand wash is often overlooked. Most are packaged in single-use plastic and filled with synthetic fragrances and detergents that can strip your skin and end up in our waterways. If you’re washing your hands multiple times a day, why not make it a low-tox option thats good for your skin, your sink, and the planet. Check out our 100% natural hand wash options from here.

Swap 5: Plastic-free DIY Cleaning

Want to simplify your cleaning routine and cut back on plastic? DIY (or almost DIY) is the way to go. Whether you’re mixing your own spray or using nature’s original detergent, these options are tough on grime, gentle on you, and kind to the planet:

Go For Zero – Zero Waste Dish & Laundry Block

Not quite DIY, but just as low-waste and versatile. This 4-in-1 block replaces dish liquid, surface spray, laundry detergent and even veggie wash. Made with lemon myrtle and other plant-based ingredients, it lasts ages and comes with no plastic, no nasties and no fuss. One block replaces up to 170 bottles of surface spray or 150 loads of laundry. Learn about all the ways you can use it here.

That Red House – Organic Soap Berries

These little powerhouses grow on trees and contain saponin, a plant-based soap. Pop a few into a wash bag and throw them in your washing machine or soak them to create a multi-purpose cleaning liquid. They’re gentle on sensitive skin, and can be reused several times before heading to the compost bin. The smallest bag lasts 90+ washes, the medium bag lasts 180+ washes, and the large bag lasts 365+ washes! Learn more about these awesome cleaning berries and how to use them here

Tip:Add essential oils for extra scent and antibacterial power.
