If you had to replenish all of your cleaning products at once, what would that look like for you?
From dishwashing liquids, laundry detergent, surface cleaners, polishing products, and maybe even some stain removers, the list can get carried away in a hurry. In fact, the average Australian home restocks 6-7 cleaning products on regular rotation!
Outside of the cost of maintaining this typical cleaning product regime, the 6-7 products are probably packaged in plastic, full of water (hello heavy shipping!), and likely pretty bulky to store.
But what if we told you there was just one natural cleaning product that could tackle the job of your top contenders and recover valuable space in your cleaning cupboard? Sounds too good to be true? Let’s unpack this all-in-one masterpiece!
As you already know, we’re all about multi-purpose cleaning here at Go For Zero. Why? Because combining products into one highly effective solution does wonders for our wallets, our environment, and ultimately, our health!
From shipping to toxins, swapping to truly natural cleaning products in Australia is one of our favourite ways to reduce our impact and clean up our homes (see what we did there?).
That’s why we knew That Red House Soapberries were the perfect addition to our Go For Zero family.
Soapberries are a naturally occurring fruit from the Sapindus Mukorossi tree. By simply harvesting and drying the fruit, the berries become an amazing detergent for many things!
The soapberries from That Red House are harvested from the Himalayas and 100% organically grown for a truly zero waste product. That’s right! Because the berries naturally dissolve in your washing over time, you’ll never have to worry about how to dispose of them correctly!
Great! So how do we use them?
Soapberries are most commonly used as a laundry detergent alternative. By placing a few in the little wash bag included, the little fruits sud up and wash away dirt and odours from your clothing with ease.
However, much like our dish and laundry bar (another great space-saving superhero), these little babies do so much more than clean your clothes!
From washing your windows and mirrors to creating the perfect shaving cream or baby wash, there are endless opportunities are endless!
The first step in turning your soapberries into a multi-use wonder is to create a soapberry liquid.
This is done by boiling about 10 whole shells per litre of water for 15-20 minutes. Once boiled, use the back of a spoon to gently squeeze out extra saponins from the berries. From here, simply strain your cooled liquid using a cotton cloth. Socks, old t-shirts, or the little cotton bag included with your berries are perfect for this process.
To create a bathroom, kitchen, or surface cleaner, simply pop your liquid into a spray bottle and add your favourite laundry tonic. The tonic adds a beautiful natural scent and extra cleaning power to leave your home feeling fresh!
Ready to transform your liquid into shampoo, hand wash, or body wash?
Add 2-4 tsp of guar gum to 500mL of soapberry liquid and mix through with a kitchen hand-held blender. Use your thickened mixture as is, or add in a touch of Laundry tonic for a fresh scent!
Once you’ve got your thickened liquid for soap, you can add a 1tsp of olive oil or coconut oil per 100mL of soap.
Blend up the oil and liquid to form a luxurious emulsified cream that’s perfect for even the most sensitive of skin!
That’s right, this wonder product can even provide that streak-free shine you know and love from traditional glass products.
Simply mix 2 parts soapberry liquid with 1 part vinegar and top it off with 1-2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil.
Need a little extra oomph on those tricky stains?
Use your liquid soapberries as a pre-soak by spraying directly onto stains and rubbing away before adding to the wash.
Take it up a notch by using your thickened ‘soap recipe mix’ and adding in a drop or two of eucalyptus oil. From here, just apply directly to your stain and gently massage until the stain lifts!
The secret is out! Now that you know how organic soapberries can transform your cleaning routine, there’s no need to stock your cleaning cupboard with single-use cleaners again!
