Most people think sustainable travel means buying a whole new set of eco products or sacrificing convenience. I don't. And In fact, I think that's one of the biggest misconceptions about living sustainably.

Buying a cupboard full of "green" gadgets you'll rarely use isn't sustainable either. The most eco-friendly travel kit isn't the biggest one but it's the one you'll actually reach for every single trip.

At Go For Zero, we believe sustainability should make life simpler, not more complicated. That's why I love finding reusable swaps that naturally replace disposable ones. They save money, reduce waste and make travelling easier, whether you're heading interstate, off on a camping adventure or simply packing snacks for a day at the park.

The best part? Once these habits become part of your routine, you barely think about them anymore.

Key Takeaways

  1. Pack reusable travel essentials once and use them for years.
  2. Reduce single-use plastic without sacrificing convenience.
  3. Save money by avoiding bottled water, takeaway packaging and last-minute purchases.
  4. Keep kids entertained with reusable, refillable activities.
  5. Small habits create a lighter footprint for your family and the planet.

Sustainable Travel Isn't About Being Perfect

When I first started my low-waste journey, I was full of good intentions... but completely unprepared. I'd leave home determined to avoid plastic, only to realise my reusable coffee cup was still sitting on the bench. I'd head to the supermarket and discover I'd forgotten my produce bags. Or I'd find myself carrying (balancing)  groceries in my arms because I'd left my shopping bags in the car (please tell me I'm not the only one!).

It wasn't because I didn't care, but because I hadn't built the habit yet. And I think that's where most people get stuck. We don't create waste because we're lazy. We create waste because life gets busy. Hungry kids. Delayed flights. Road trips that take longer than expected. Convenience wins! We're only human.

That's why I don't believe sustainable travel is about having more willpower. It's about making the sustainable choice the easiest choice.

These days, there are a handful of reusable travel essentials that permanently live in my handbag, car and suitcase. They've helped our family avoid countless disposable coffee cups, drink bottles, snack wrappers and plastic bags, and they've made travelling so much less stressful.

Did you know Australians throw away enough packaging every year to fill theMelbourne Cricket Ground nine times? It sounds overwhelming, but it's also a reminder that the little choices we make every day really do add up.

Here are the five reusable travel essentials I never leave home without.

1. Pack Your Own Snacks (And Skip the Disposable Packaging)

One forgotten snack stop can quickly turn into a handful of individually wrapped treats, bottled drinks and unnecessary plastic. Trust me, we've been there. Now I pack snacks in reusable food storage before we head anywhere.

A little preparation makes a huge difference. Our favourites include reusable silicone food pouches, stainless steel lunch boxes, food storage containers and beeswax wraps. They're durable, leak-proof and built to last for years, making them one of the simplest ways to reduce waste while travelling.

Even better, you're not only reducing food waste, you'll also be avoiding unnecessary plastic touching your food and saving money every time you leave home prepared.

2. Bring Your Own Drink Bottle and Coffee Cup

Every morning, I still notice just how many disposable coffee cups end up in people's hands. Most of us never stop to think about it because they're used for such a short time.

However, most takeaway cups contain a plastic lining that can release thousands of microplastic particles into hot drinks. That's why my reusable drink bottle and coffee cup have become non-negotiables.

Our stainless steel insulated drink bottles keep water cold for hours, while our beautiful glass reusable coffee cups let you enjoy your morning coffee without plastic touching your drink.

If you're travelling somewhere with questionable tap water, I also love adding an activated charcoal water filter to my drink bottle. It naturally improves the taste of water by helping reduce chlorine and certain heavy metals while leaving beneficial minerals behind. It's one small habit that makes every trip simpler.

3. Packing Cubes Make Travelling So Much Easier

I'll admit it, I didn't understand the hype around packing cubes at first. Now I wouldn't travel without them. They're one of those products you don't realise you need until you've used them once.

Our beautiful packing cubes from Mika Creations are handmade from juco, a natural blend of jute and cotton, making them a thoughtful alternative to synthetic organisers. They keep clothes, shoes and toiletries neatly separated, which means no more digging through your entire suitcase looking for one clean pair of socks.

You can even use them when you're not travelling. Keep one in your gym bag or one packed in the car with spare clothes and everyday essentials. They're simple, practical and long-lasting. Exactly how sustainable products should be!

 4. Swap Bottles for Solid Bars

If you've ever opened your suitcase to discover shampoo covering everything inside... you'll already know why I'm obsessed with solid bars.

At Go For Zero, we love bars over bottles. Not only because they're plastic-free, but they're easier too. Solid shampoo, conditioner and body wash bars don't leak, don't count towards your airport liquid allowance and last much longer than many bottled alternatives. Simply pop them into a soap travel tin and you're ready to go.

Our solid bars are made with 100% natural ingredients and completely free from plastic packaging, they're one of those swaps that's good for you, good for the planet and surprisingly convenient.

5. Keep Kids Entertained Without Buying More Stuff

Every parent knows those moments. The delayed flight. Waiting for lunch at a café. The final hour of a long road trip. It's tempting to buy another activity book or cheap toy that'll be forgotten by the time you get home. Instead, we've found that reusable activities are not only better for the environment but they're often more creative too.

Our Paper Saver Reusable Notebook lets you turn single-sided A4 scrap paper into a brand-new notebook for drawing, holiday journals, games or shopping lists. Pair it with our Earth Pens, which use 85% less plastic than traditional pens, or natural Honeysticks beeswax crayons and watercolour paints for creative little ones.

It's a simple way to encourage creativity while giving perfectly good paper a second life.

The Best Travel Kit Is the One You Actually Use

After years of trying to live more sustainably, I've learnt that sustainable travel isn't about packing perfectly. It's about being prepared and packing intentionally.

You don't need dozens of eco products or replace everything you own, you just need a handful of reusable essentials that fit naturally into your life. This way the sustainable choice becomes the easy choice. And that's when lasting habits begin.

It is not about being perfect. It is about making every trip is another opportunity to leave a place just a little better than we found it. If enough of us keep making those small swaps, they won't feel small anymore.

If you're ready to build your own low-waste travel kit, explore our range of eco-friendly travel essentials and discover how easy sustainable travel can be.

Happy travels,
Ellie xoxo
