In 2016, Bhutan (a small country next to India) produced 2.2 million tonnes of CO2. However, their forests removed 3 x this amount, making them a carbon sink for 4 million tonnes of CO2 per year.
The way their country operates is based on this statement below:
With a mission to put happiness before economic growth, Bhutan has set the world standard for environmental preservation.
They export renewable energy from their fast-flowing rivers, which avoids more than 6 million tonnes of CO2 being produced. By 2020 they will export enough energy to eliminate 17 million tonnes of CO2 a year.
Their economy is small but:
They believe economic growth must not come from undermining their unique culture or pristine environment.
I'm speechless, there are so so many things I love about this, I hope they can inspire other countries to shift their mindset to prioritise the health of people & the planet, over profit.
