Ever taken a sip of tap water and thought… yeah, that’s not it? I've definitely had those moments, especially when travelling.

Between chlorine, odd smells, and that slightly metallic taste, it’s no surprise so many of us look for ways to improve the quality and taste of our water at home. But most filtration systems come with plastic cartridges that continually need replacing, ongoing costs, and a bit more effort than we’d like.

Here’s the good news. Cleaning up your water can actually be incredibly simple.Activated charcoal water filters are a low-waste, no-fuss option that quietly improves your water while keeping things natural and plastic-free.

Let’s get into it!

What's an activated charcoal water filter?

At its core, an activated charcoal water filter is a natural way to reduce impurities in your water.

It’s made from carbon-rich materials that have been heated to create a highly porous surface. These tiny pores are what allow the charcoal to trap unwanted impurities that sit in your water.

Our Go For Zero Activated Charcoal Water Filter comes in a compact stick that you simply place into your water bottle or jug. No setup, no parts to replace, no crazy learning curve.

Just drop it in and let it do its thing.

Charcoal vs activated charcoal: what’s the difference?

They might sound the same, but they behave very differently.Regular charcoal is created by burning organic material. It has some absorbent qualities, but it’s not designed for filtering water.

On the other hand, activated charcoal goes a step further. It’s been specially treated to open up millions of microscopic pores, giving it a much larger surface area to capture impurities. That extra processing is what turns it from basic charcoal into something powerful enough to actually filter your water.

How does an activated charcoal filter work?

Instead of soaking things up, activated charcoal works by binding particles to its surface. This process is called adsorption (different from absorption). As the activated charcoal filter sits in your water, it:

  • Reduces chlorine and heavy metals
  • Improves taste and smell
  • Helps minimise limescale

You’ll usually notice a difference within an hour, but the longer the filter it sits in your water, the more effective it becomes.

What does it remove from your water?

Activated charcoal is especially good at targeting the things that affect how your water tastes and smells. It helps to reduce:

  • Chlorine
  • Heavy Metals
  • Unpleasant odours
  • Some chemical contaminants
  • Sediment and fine particles

It’s a simple way to make your water more enjoyable to drink every day.

What doesn’t it remove?

It has its limits. The activated charcoal filter won't remove:

  • Fluoride
  • Bacteria or viruses

If you’re dealing with more complex water concerns, and want to filter out contaminants such as PFAS, you may need a more advanced filtration setup such as a filter from Tappwater

Will it strip out the good minerals too?

Nope, and that’s a big win.Activated charcoal focuses on removing unwanted substances while leaving beneficial minerals like calcium, magnesium and sodium in your water. So you’re not left with “empty” water, just cleaner, better-tasting water.

How do you use an activated charcoal water filter?

It doesn’t get much easier than this:

  1. When you get your filter, give it a quick rinse under your tap to remove any loose pieces of charcoal.
  2. Fill your bottle or jug with water, place the activated charcoal filter inside, and leave it for at least an hour (but if you can leave it longer, it can adsorb more). That’s it.

No soaking beforehand, no complicated steps. It’s already been heat-treated and sterilised, so it’s ready from the moment you open it.

How long does a charcoal water filter last?

Each Go For Zero activated charcoal filter stick is designed to last up to 6 months. Here’s the simple routine:

  1. Use it daily in about 1 litre of water for 3 months
  2. After 3 months, boil it in a pot of water for 10 minutes. Boiling the filter will help to remove the impurities it has adsorbed and will refresh it.
  3. Now you can keep using it for another 3 months (yay)
  4. After 6 months of use, it’s ready to retire.

This is where it really shines as a zero-waste swap.Instead of tossing your used charcoal filter in the bin, you can:

  • Break it up and add it to your compost or mix it into your garden. Trust me, your plants will love it.
  • Pop it in your fridge, wardrobe, or gym bag to absorb odours.

Nothing wasted, everything repurposed!

Some swaps feel like effort. This one doesn’t.It slips into your routine without changing anything else. Same bottle, same jug, just better water and less waste.
