Say goodbye to winter blues and hello to sunny days and hands in the dirt. Spring has arrived, and with it comes the perfect excuse to give your garden (or balcony pots!) some much-needed love. An extra benefit is that gardening has a positive impact on our mental health, so let's get our hands dirty!

Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or a total newbie, this season is a chance to refresh your space, grow your own food or herbs and fill your home with colour, all while doing your bit for the planet.

First... Soil! Healthy Soil, Happy Plants

If there is only one thing you learn in this blog, let it be this: before you get carried away with planting anything, the first step is to always prep the real star of the show: your soil.

Think of it as the foundation for your garden’s future. Enriching your soil with compost helps give plants the nutrients they need to thrive, while regular watering keeps them happy once planted.

If you’re keen to level up your sustainability game, now’s the time to start composting. OurUrban Composters (hello, kitchen-friendly heroes!) let you transform food scraps into nutrient-rich fertiliser without the odours or mess. That means less landfill, healthier soil, and plants that grow like they’re on a wellness retreat.

Springtime Fruits and Vegetables

Spring is a smorgasbord of planting opportunities for fruits and vegetables. In warm, frost-free areas (north of Coffs Harbour to Geraldtontropical favourites like passionfruit, paw paw, mangoes and guavas thrive. Veggies such as eggplants, sweet potatoes, chillies, beans and pumpkins also love the warming soil.

In cooler regions (Tasmania, southern Victoria, the southern highlands of NSW, the ACT and parts of southern South Australia, hardy crops do well. Think strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and currants, alongside broccoli, cabbage, kale, carrots, peas and beetroot.

Temperate zones, including much of Victoria, South Australia and southern WA, suit a mix of fruits and vegetables. Plant blueberries, apricots and grapes, and enjoy vegetables like climbing beans, leeks, silverbeet, carrots, radishes and lettuces.

Grow Your Own Kitchen Herbs

No garden is complete without herbs. Basil, parsley, mint, coriander, thyme and oregano not only smell amazing, but also save you trips to the supermarket and most are very easy to grow. Whether you’re adding fresh basil to your salad or a sprig of thyme to roast veggies, spring is the perfect time to grow these fragrant kitchen staples. P.s Many herbs grow well in pots, making them accessible even in apartments or small outdoor spaces.

Flowers for Instant Colour

A garden bursting with colourful flowers is fun way to lift your mood, brighten any space and support pollinators. Australia’s diverse climate means your flower choices will vary by region. Southern states can enjoy petunias, snapdragons and geraniums; Western Australia suits marigolds, portulacas and kangaroo paw; Queensland thrives with gardenias and cosmos; and Tasmanians can plant belladonna lilies or giant sunflowers. Compact varieties suit small pots, while taller plants like sunflowers or snapdragons create drama along fences or garden backs.

And if you don't know where to start, you can brighten your garden in a snap with our flower seed kits. And when your blooms are at their best, get creative with a flower press to preserve your favourites and turn them into beautiful keepsakes from your garden harvest.

The Joy of Growing Your Own

After a long winter, spring is a chance to refresh, reconnect and create something beautiful. Whether you’re planting a lemon tree for future homemade lemonade, growing herbs for your Sunday roast, or filling your pots with flowers to bring colour to your balcony, every seed planted is a little act of care for the planet and is great for our mental health!
