Meat Free Week 2022

By 2050, experts predict that global meat intake will need to be  cut by 50%. Why, you ask? Simply put, because of the lack of sustainability associated with producing meat.

This is why initiatives like Meat Free Week are so near and dear to our hearts here at Go For Zero.

Whether you are considering going vegan or vegetarian, or simply just want to learn more about the impact of livestock, you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s dive into the reason behind Meat Free Week in Australia, the recipes to get you there and how you can participate!

Meat Free Week

What is Meat Free Week

Meat Free Week takes place from the 27th of September to the 3rd of October in 2022. The intention, as you’ve likely already guessed, is to reduce your meat intake by opting for delicious and  nutritious meat-free recipes.

Don’t panic, this doesn’t mean you need to cut all meat cold turkey (excuse the pun). Instead, the initiative encourages individuals to try out meat-free meals at a pace that works for them. In fact, just 1 meal through the week is all it takes to participate and spread awareness!

Why is Meat Free Week Important?

So why exactly should you consider participating in Meat Free week in 2022? Let’s take a look at some pretty eye-opening numbers!

Believe it or not, agriculture and the consumption of meat are a massive part of the climate change crisis. In fact, if a family of 4 cut out just one meal of meat per week, they would save the carbon equivalent of boiling  1553 kettles! How crazy is that?!

By simply replacing meat with plant-based proteins, Australians could reduce their carbon footprint by over 50% - that’s more than if you were to stop driving your car!

In addition to making a massive difference to the emissions of greenhouse gasses, reducing meat intake also saves an epic amount of water! Because it takes so much water to feed and fuel the land and animals in preparation for the meat we eat, that same family of 4 replacing 1 meal per week would also save 35 days worth of personal use water.

With such a direct connection between meat and sustainability, this could perhaps be the easiest and most effective way to help the planet yet!

How to Participate

Ready to give it a go? That’s amazing! All you need to do to participate is substitute one (or more if you like) of your meat-based meals for a plant-based alternative!

With so many delicious meat-free recipes, you may even discover a new favourite meal! Once you’ve got your planet-saving recipes in place, you can make a few simple swaps in the kitchen such as replacing your baking paper with our  reusable silicone baking mats and storing your leftovers in  reusable food pouches instead of single-use plastic!

Ready to do a little more?  Pledge your support to Meat Free Week and spread the word to your friends, family, and social media followers! The more awareness we can create around the impact of meat, the bigger difference we can make!
